Club History
1954 - The club was founded under
the name North Haledon Soccer Club. The club met at Wernes Grove (later
the Tides Restaurant) in North Haledon. Dues were $1 a week, and the club finished
in 6th place that year in the old North Jersey State Soccer League.
1955 - The club finished in 4th place
1957 - The club changed its name to the Haledon Sports Club and
moved into the Haledon Labor Lyceum Club in Haledon. The club also won
League championship for the first time.
1959 - The club began participating in an organized handball league,
which lasted for two years.
1960-61 - The club played the West Point Military Academy and won both
games.
1962 - The first trip to Germany was organized, and the club came back
with one win and four losses. Their opponents included TSV Ronsdorf-Wuppertal,
Eintract Hoehr-Grenshausen, F.C. Neureut, S.C. Kirchheim-Heidelberg, and Schwarz-Weiss
Muenchen. The club made many friends while in the old country.
1964 - TSV Ronsdorf-Wuppertal pays their first visit to the USA. The
visitors beat Haledon 6-5. The year the club also joined the German American
Soccer League. The club celebrated their 10th anniversary with a dinner dance
at the President Palace Ball Room in Passaic, along with the Ronsdorf players.
The team also won the 3rd Division of the GASL.
1965 - The club played its first year in the GASL 2nd Division. The club
also won the New Jersey Amateur Cup and held a victory celebration at the Swiss
Tavern in Pompton Lakes. Haledon hosted their friends TSV Ronsdorf, and won
3-1 in front of 2,000 spectators in Haledon. The halftime entertainment was
provided by the world champion Hawthorne Cabelleros Drum and Bugle Corps.
1966 - The club went back to Germany, and returned having won two and
lost one game. They played TSV Ronsdorf, F.C. Kirchfeld, and ASV Ettlingen.
1967 - The club hosted Heinbronn at the Wayne Oval, and lost 4-1.
1968 - Haledon hosts the world famous 1860 Munich Old-Timers, losing
7-1. They also hosted TSV 07 Stuttgart for three weeks, and tied them 1-1 in
their game. The club also merged with the Haledon Labor Lyceum, creating
the current name, Haledon Lyceum Sports Club.
1969 - The club returned to Germany a third time. This time, the town
of Ronsdorf dedicated a street in Ronsdorf after the township of Haledon, called
"Haledon Strasse." They club lost the dedication game 6-1. They also
lost to TSV 07 Stuttgart 6-3, but salvaged a 3-3 tie versus Ettlingen.
1970 - Haledon returns to Germany, this time returning with a 3-1 victory.
1971 - 1860 Munich Old-Timers visit again, this time the club prevails,
7-2.
1972 - Stuttgart visits and comes away with a 1-1 tie.
1973 - The Haledon Jrs. won their league championship going undefeated,
and also defeated K.V. Karlshuhr of Germany in a friendly by a score of 3-2.
The club chartered a flight to Germany.
1974 - The club chartered another flight to Germany. The Haledon Jrs.
finished 2nd in the Schaefer Jr. League, and the state. The club celebrates
its 20th Anniversary with a gala evening at the North Haledon Firehouse.
1975-78 - Haledon remained in the 3rd Division of the Cosmopolitan League.
1979 - The club moved up to the 2nd Division of the Cosmopolitan League,
and once again reformed the Haledon Jr. team. The club celebrated its 25th anniversary
on November 9th at the Wayne Manor in Wayne, NJ.
1980-82 - Haledon competed in the Major Division of the Cosmopolitan
League. The 1980 Junior team won the Cosmopolitan Junior League championship.
In 1982, the club also hosted F.C. Hertha Berlin of West Germany and won 3-2.
1983 - The team participated in the Dortmunder Summer Tournament, finishing
in 2nd place behind Sportsfriends of Wayne.
1984 - The club installed a new roof on the club house near the Roe Street
field.
1985 - The club on W. Clinton Street is sold, with the stipulation that
the club may use the facility for two more years. The club was the home to many
social activities, including bicycling, skiing, chess, ping pong, cards, watching
Mickey Mouse cartoons and even some streaking.
1987 - The club finds a new home, sharing the facility of the Haledon
Benefit and Social Club.
1988 - The team moves to the North Jersey Soccer League.
1989 - The team competes in the First Division of the NJSL. The club
celebrates its 35th Anniversary with a dinner dance at The Guild Hall.
1992 - The club wins the NJSL for the first time.
1993 - The club repeats as NJSL champions after it is determined that
Doxa used several ineligible players in a 2-1 victory against Haledon.
1994 - The club wins the NJSL for an unprecedented third year in a row,
and the League trophy is retired. The club celebrates it 40th anniversary with
a huge dinner dance at La Neves Cedar Cliff Restaurant. Members were awarded
service pins of 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40 years. A special award was presented
to Karl Wagner for his undying support and loyalty since the clubs inception.
1999 - The club finishes in 3rd place in the league. It also beats Spotswood
United 4-0 in the 1st round of the State Cup, and loses a tough one to Woodbridge
in the second round, 2-1.
2000 - The club starts the new millenium by beating the Ridge Rovers
2-1 in double OT to win the NJSL on a cold, rainy day in Ridge. Matt Kastner
is club MVP for the year 2000.
2001 - The club finished in second place in the West Division, lost in
the semi-finals of the NJSL to Pompton Lakes. The club also began its own website,
www.haledonsoccer.com. Mike Rehberger is club MVP for 2001.
2002 - The club finished the season in 4th place in the West Division,
and lost in the second round of the NJSL playoffs to Pompton Lakes.
