6/15/03 Haledon 4-2 Oakland (Haledon, NJ) After a shaky spring season, Haledon found its winning ways again in the first round of the playoffs. Playing a scrappy Oakland from the NJSL East Division for the first time ever in league play, Haledon battled the heat, a brief second half letdown, and a physical confrontation to come away with the 4-2 victory at home. In the first half the team kept attacking, but couldn't break through the Oakland defense until around the twenty minute mark when a Frank Piccininni corner kick turned into an own goal. From then on, Haledon jumped all over Oakland. A short time later, another Piccininni corner found Matt Huebner's head, who banged it home for the 2-0 lead. This was followed by a goal from super-sub John Ezmat, who only required four minutes of playing time to score, and then promptly hurt himself and be removed from the game. At the end of the half, Steve Robinson finally notched his first goal since returning from his self-imposed exile earlier this spring. Matt Kastner also was tremendous in goal, helping preservere the first half shutout by stopping a PK. In the second half, things began to get fiesty as the
lack of an official referee (duties ably handled by Ken Kneis) as well
as the heat started to take their toll on emotions for both teams. Oakland
was able to put in a goal, and later overly physical play by an Oakland
player led to an altercation, which in turn led to the ejection of a
player from both teams. Later, Oakland scored another, but Haledon "battened
down the hatches", and held on for the win.

5/18/03 Haledon 0-0 Parsippany Blues (Parsippany, NJ) Once again, Haledon had another great defensive performance, and another lackluster offensive showing in tying the Parsippany Blues 0-0 in Parsippany. Haledon came into the game knowing that although the scoreline between the two teams in their last meeting didn't show it, that this was a tough Parsippany team. And both teams played very well. Haledon had the better offensive chances, but although the team was able to keep the ball in the Parsippany end for much of the game, they were not able to put it across the line. Meanwhile, goalie Matt Kastner made several great saves in backing up the stalwart defensive four of Brad Smith, Steve Every, Scott Shappell and Pete Huryk. |

5/11/03 Haledon 1-1 Turkish Eagles (Haledon, NJ) Facing another tough opponent, Haledon fell behind early, then knotted the score late to gain a point against the Turkish Eagles. The team conceded a goal on a perfect cross and finish at around the twenty minute mark, but never let it get them down. Continuing to battle and press, the defense locked down the visitor's attack, and created several good chances that were not able to find the mark. Battling to create something in the waning moments, Haledon managed to draw a corner kick in the 90th minute. In the confusion of bodies, Matty Huebner managed to get a head on the ball, which took a nasty deflection off a defender and rolled into the goal. |

5/4/03 Haledon 2-5 Real Wyckoff (Haledon, NJ) Haledon controlled much of the play, and outshot their opponents, but fell behind early and were not able to recover in a 5-2 loss to Real Wyckoff. In the first half, the home side was able to create many good scoring chances, but were unable to convert. Wyckoff on the other hand, jumped on the few chances they got before intermission, scoring 3 goals on four shots. Sporting a comletely revampted lineup from the one they fielded in the fall, their counter attacks surprised Haledon out of the gate. In the second half, Haledon had the better of the play, but once again it was Wyckoff who did the scoring as they netted a miracle 40 yard blast at around the 65 minute mark. Haledon did not let their heads down, and finally they were rewarded when Scott Shappell was brought down in the box for a penalty kick the Frank Piccininni converted. A short while later, after much pressing, a Piccininni corner kick resulted in a header for Matt Huebner that found the back of the net. The team continue to press and create chances, but were unable to finish any of them. The visitors put the nail in the coffin when with about five minutes left, the ball was stolen at midfield, and with few defenders back the visitors knocked it around a few times before putting it away. |

4/27/03 Haledon 0-0 Black Label (Haledon, NJ) Haledon posted its third shutout of the year Sunday, but was unable
to convert any of its chances and had to settle for a 0-0 tie with Black
Label. Making its return to the pitch for the first time since December,
and minus fall starters Gregg Rehberger (knee injury) and Brad Smith
(Hanta virus), the defense of Steve Every, Matt Huebner, Carlos Bueno,
Scott Shappell, and goalkeeper Matt Kastner managed to deny the visitors
any serious opportunity. |

3/30/03 Haledon 3- 2 Randolph (Elizabeth, NJ) The second half was another story, as the team's lack of fitness was evident when they let a pesky Randolph team back in it. Led by an early goal from a dashing, mysterious left midfielder who's piercing run and brilliant finish breathed new life into their team, Randolph began to make a spirited run at Haledon. A short while later, they found the back of the net again, as HLSC seemed to get tired. They went up for good though on a late breakaway chip-shot from Jim McIntyre. Although the team showed that fitness-wise it has a long way to go, they did demonstrate their sense of purpose in winning, and picking up where they left off in league play in the fall.

| 11/10/02 Haledon 7 - 0 Waldwick (Haledon,
NJ) Haledon rebounded from its frustrating State Cup loss with an immaculate performance against Waldwick on Sunday. Controlling almost the entire game, the home team went up on the visitors twenty minutes in whenVin Gatto tucked away what would be the game winning goal. Later in the half, Jim McIntyre struck for his second of the year, followed a short time later by a blast from Bobby Ciccarella who hit for his first of the year. In the second half, the performance continued to be balanced as the defense and offense both put in a superb efforts, really gelling. Smart ball movement and a supreme work rate produced goals by Giancarlo Lepore, Werner Mashig, Scott Shappell and Matt Huebner. Miguel Lopez did well playing goal the first time this year, making five saves in the shutout. The defense, led by Gregg Rehberger, Matt Huebner, Brad Smith, Scott Shappell, and Steve Every battened down the hatches to ensure the second shutout on the year. The only disappointment was the noticeable absence of the Mashig family contingent from the sidelines, as well as the poor turnout at the club after the game. Only the 10 who went get "props" this week...everyone else is...well, you know. |
| 11/03/02 Haledon 2 - 3 Rahway and Rio United
(Rahway, NJ) Haledon pounded Rahway and Rio for the final 30 minutes, but could not pull out a victory in the State Cup on Sunday. Going down 1-0 on a penalty kick only minutes into the game, Haledon quickly evened the score when Pete Huryk knocked in a Bobby Ciccarella cross soon after. A well placed Rahway shot put the visitors behind 2-1 at halftime. In the second half, Haledon began to apply heavy pressure, but a defensive breakdown on a quick counter attack put them down 3-1. In the final 30 minutes, Haledon pounded the goal, but the Rahway keep made incredible save after incredible save. Finally, Frank Piccininni broke through the defenses with a shot off a pass from Giancarlo Lepore. As time ran out, Haledon continued to send balls just over the crossbar, or within reach of the keeper who had a career day in thwarting a relentless attack. |
| 10/27/02 Haledon 2 - 1 Black Label (Haledon,
NJ) Haledon continued its winning ways Sunday with a goal in the waning minutes to beat Black Label 2-1. Playing at home, the boys in white went ahead in the first half when Gregg Rehberger ran up from sweeper, collected a loose ball...touched it several times to tee it perfectly, and then blasted it in from 6 yards out. Haledon squandered several other chances in the first half as every pass seemed to be off by just a foot or so. In the second half the visitors drew even on a cross into the box that was collected and fired home in one of the few chances the defense afforded the opposition. Later, Black Label was awarded a penalty kick on a controversial take down by Matt Huebner around the edge of the box. The kick went over the bar, and Haledon had new life. Then, with less than three minutes left, Giancarlo Lepore intercepted a pass, dribbled pass the defense from right to the left side, cut the ball back and crossed it to Werner Mashig who redirected a rocket off his head and past the keeper. |
| 10/20/02 Haledon 2 - 1 Parmalat (Haledon,
NJ) Haledon Lyceum defeated a tough Parmalat team Sunday in a battle of NJSL West division leaders in Haledon. Fifteen minutes into the game, the home team went ahead on a Matt Huebner header off a Frank Piccininni corner kick. Later in the half, they pushed the lead to two goals off of a Giancarlo Lepore shot from a indirect kick from Steve Every. Later, Bobby Ciccarella and a Parmalat player were ejected for fighting. The second half was highlighted by two penalty kicks awarded to Parmalat for players being brought down in the box. The visitors made the first midway through the half, but Matt Kastner's kick save in the waning minutes preserved a well fought victory.

| 10/13/02 Haledon 9 - 3 Parsippany (Haledon,
NJ) Haledon got back on track Sunday with a win against a skilled, but undermanned Parsippany squad. Building a 3-0 halftime lead, the team looked like it was in control. Parsippany used a quick counter in the second half in drawing within two goals. Haledon hit for another, before Parsippany again used quick counters down the middle of the field to score two more goals within a ten minute span. Haledon then put the game away taking adavantage of their opponents pushing up to finish with five goals in the last 25 minutes for the 9-3 victory. Haledon goals were scored by Werner Mashig (2), Scott Shappell (2), Giancarlo Lepore, Bobby Ciccarella, Brett Weiss, Frank Picininni, and Jim McIntyre. Assists from Pete Huryk, Brad Smith, Lepore, and John Ezmat off a beautiful butt trap. |

10/6/02 Haledon 1 - 5 Turkish Eagles (Bloomfield, NJ) |
| 9/29/02 Haledon 3 - 0 Teaneck (Haledon,
NJ) The Haledon first team continued its winning ways on Sunday with a convincing 3-0 win over Teaneck. The team came out strong from the start, and went up on top about 20 minutes into the game. Vinnie Gatto passes the ball to Brad Smith on the flank, who hit a bullet cross to Werner Mashig to redirect into the goal. In the second half, a Scott Shappell cross was headed by Mashig to Carlos Bueno, who hit a no-angle shot into the net. Mashig closed out the scoring by running onto a bouncing Matt Kastner punt and putting it in the side netting. Kaster punched many balls away in the box to preserve his first shutout since 2001, and Matt Huebner and Smith were strong on defence to limit the Teaneck chances. |
| 9/22/02 Haledon 6 - 1 Patrick Real Wyckoff
(Haledon, NJ) Haledon continued to be in mid-season form in a 6-1 defeat of Patrick Real Wyckoff on Sunday. The team started the first 20 minutes shaky, giving up an early goal to Wyckoff. Fifteen minutes later, Werner Mashig stole the ball in Wyckoff's end and drilled it home for Haledon's first goal. A short while later, Miguel Lopez crossed the ball, which Scott Shappell chipped over the goalie for what would be the game winner. Haledon kept up the pressure in the second half as Mashig once again struck on a pretty cross from Vin Gatto. Minutes later, Mashig made a square pass across the top of the box that Pete Huryk dummied, and Frank Piccininni tucked away. Then, John Ezmat struck off a feed from Huryk, and Shappell finished the scoring with a header off a perfectly placed free kick from Giancarlo Lepore. The defence played well in the back, and GK Matt Kastner made several diving saves to keep their opponent scoreless in the second half. ![]() |
| 9/15/02 Haledon 3 - 1 Waldwick (Waldwick,
NJ) The Haledon First Team won its season opener at Waldwick on Sunday. Playing on a small pitch, Haledon had a hard time breaking through until John Ezmat was taken down in the box from behind by the Waldwick goalie, which resulted in a red card and penalty kick. Gregg Rehberger put the good guys up 1-0 on the PK. Early in the second half, HLSC allowed Waldwick to pull even. Brett Weiss's right footed shot from 18 yards out put Haledon ahead for good, and Werner Mashig's late strike ensured that the season would get off to a good start with the team's opening win. |
| 9/8/02 Haledon 1 - 1 RD Benders (Elizabeth, NJ
- RexPlex) The first teams' first scrimmage had a disappointing scoreline, but showed some of the promise the new season holds with their recent player additions. Controlling most of the game, Haledon missed many chances and the teams were knotted at 0-0 going into halftime on the hot sport-turf at the RexPlex. A second half strike by Werner Mashig kept the result respectable, while the tuneup was mainly used to try out many players at new and different positions before next week's opener. |
