Week of 4/21/02
Haledon 3 - Waldwick 3
Two weeks after losing at home to Waldwick, HLSC managed a tie in the
return leg away. Tied 1-1 at halftime on a Brad Smith goal, Haledon pulled
ahead in the second half on goal by Steve Robinson. However, each time they
scored Waldwick managed to even it. Overall it was a much improved effort
over the first game of the spring season.
Week of 4/7/02
Haledon 1 - Waldwick 2
In the first game of the Spring campaign, the good guys fell to a visiting
Waldwick team 2-1. After falling behind 1-0 during a sluggish first half,
Haledon came out to make several good runs at the Kickers goal. The boys in
red finally tied it off a Ken Kneis header to Frank Piccininni, whose shot
bounced off the goalkeeper and was tucked away by Bobby Ciccarella. They were
done in during a last minute scrum in front of the home goal however that
brings then to .500 on the season.
Week of 12/2/01
Haledon 2 - Emeralds 0
The good guys finished the first-half of the season with a solid effort
in defeating Emeralds. First half goals from Giancarlo Lepore and John Ezmat
proved to be the difference. The defence held tough in helping goalie Matt
Kastner gain the shutout.
Week of 11/18/01
Haledon 0 - Doxa 2
Early defensive lapses led to two goals in an away game played at a bumpy
pitch at Overpeck Park in Leonia. Haledon pressured for much of the game,
thoroughly outshooting Doxa in the second half. None of the shots could find
their mark though, as the boys in red experienced their first loss in their
last five games.
Week of 11/11/01
Haledon 5 - Hoboken 4
Haledon almost managed to blow their biggest offensive output of the season
with an all around poor defensive effort at home. The good guys prevailed
though thanks to two goals each from Giancarlo Lepore and Gregg Rehberger,
and a goal by Dennis Oriwa. Hoboken, playing a man short, managed to continually
keep it close by periodically repelling Haledon's onslaught on their goal
and and counter-attacking.
Week of 10/28/01
Haledon 2 - Ramsey 1
Haledon committed robbery in Ramsey as they stole one while shorthanded.
Starting off with 10 men, the team was reduced to 9 when Matt Huebner went
out with a sprained ankle 15 minutes in. The team tightened up defensively,
while still counter attacking enough for a first half goal by Piccininni off
the Ezmat assist in the first half. Robinson put the team ahead for good in
the second after a rebound from a Piccininni second half throw in. Ramsey,
pressing late in the second, scored during a scrum in front of the goal. But
converted keeper Dennis Oriwa kept them at bay, and contributed to the attack
with his booming punts and goal kicks.
Week of 10/21/01
Haledon 0 - Teaneck 0
A tough game with only 14 players turned into a defensive battle that resulted
in a 0-0 tie with Teaneck. Haledon had their chances though with
a few missed chances including Giancarlo's first half shot off the crossbar.
Teaneck attacks were repeatedly turned away, although GK Matt had to stop
few shots as the defense kept most of the shots high and wide.
Only five open division players showed up for Wednesday's practice. Luckily,
six O-30's were there and overall it was a good run for both teams. In the
longest running rivalry in New Jersey, the shirts (whipper-snappers) edged
out the pinney's (old masters) to break the pinney's two-game winning streak
in the weekly "game to two."
Week of 10/14/01
No Game
On Saturday, October 13, Gregg Rehberger broke the hearts of many of his
prison penpals when he finally got married. Congratulations to him, and his
lovely bride Brandy. Click
here to check out the
pictures from his wedding.
Practice was difficult on a cold windy day with only eight
(8) suckers, er uh, people showing up. Our lethargic play earned a stern
reprimand from Coach Kneis, whose teeth could be heard grinding from 30
yards. Once again, pinneys continued their dominance over shirts in a hard
fought 1-0 victory. Making the all-tournament team were pinney players Steve
Avery, Scott Shappell, Matt Huebner and Matt Kastner.
Week of 10/7/01
Haledon 3 - Emeralds 2
Emeralds scored and early one on a defensive error at Bloomfield's Brookdale
Park. But John Ezmat evened the score, then hit for two more in the first
half. Lackadaisical play in the second half led to Emeralds scoring one
late, but the team held on for their first win of the season.
Once again, practice was an exercise in futility as only
seven (7) people showed up. Pinney's beat Shirts in the final round "game
to two." The field is still underlit, and made entirely of bansai trees.
We did get some great stretching in as we searched for Avery's wedding ring
which some how flew off his chubby finger.
Week of 9/30/01
Haledon 2 - Doxa 4
Coming off Gregg's bachelor party the previous night, Haledon started
off sluggish and fell into an early 3-0 hole at home. After halftime, the
team sobered up and made a comeback, fueled by Steve Robinson's two goals.
But a defensive mix-up put the game away for good with a late goal in a
match-up of the last two league champions.
Week of 9/23/01
Haledon 0 - Hoboken 3
A league scheduling conflict resulted in the game starting late at Brookdale
Park in Bloomfield, with no nets or corner flags. An uninspired effort by
the good guys meant falling behind early and often.
